ABSTRACT

Recently, a method of fabricating an esthetic anterior fixed prosthesis by integrating data such as three-dimensional facial scan and jaw motion to form a virtual patient with dynamic occlusion has been introduced. This enables smooth communication with patients during the diagnosis process, improves the predictability of esthetic prosthetic treatment, and lowers the possibility of occlusal adjustment. In this case report, a virtual patient with dynamic occlusion was created in which the results of the treatment were simulated, and esthetic maxillary anterior fixed prosthesis was fabricated. With the aid of the virtual patient, the final restorations were satisfactory both in terms of esthetic and function.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#We aimed to investigate the changing trends in intentional drug poisoning among pediatric and adolescent patients over the past 10 years. @*Methods@#A retrospective study was conducted on patients younger than 20 years who visited an academic hospital emergency department (ED) in Incheon, Korea, from January 2011 through December 2020. The study focused on patients who responded with “self-harm or suicide” in the ED-based Injury In-depth Surveillance, and whose injury mechanism was drug poisoning. Exclusion criteria were unintentional injuries and the ingestion of substances other than drugs. To describe the trend over the decade, we used the number of events/100,000 ED annual visits of the database. @*Results@#A total of 3,388 cases with a median age of 17 years (interquartile range, 15-18 years) were included. The most frequently ingested drugs were acetaminophen (27.8%), followed by benzodiazepines (15.2%), antidepressants (14.1%), other sedatives and hypnotics (13.4%), and antipsychotics (8.3%). As for the events/100,000 ED annual visits, benzodiazepines showed the biggest increase, from 7.6 to 80.2 cases. Similarly, antidepressants increased from 10.2 to 71.1 cases, and antipsychotics from 3.6 to 53.7 cases. @*Conclusion@#Intentional drug poisoning has increased over the past 10 years, particularly in benzodiazepines, antidepressants, and antipsychotics. It is advisable to establish injury prevention strategies according to patients’ characteristics and ingested drugs.

ABSTRACT

The word “microbiome” is a combination of “microbiota” and “genome,” which represents the genomic concept of microbiota. The bacterial culture method is the mainstay of identifying microbes, while polymerase chain reaction adds diagnostic value. However, in the era of next-generation sequencing, achieving high-throughput microbiota footprints is extremely sensitive. This sensitivity often leads to confusion, as it can detect specific microbes genomes, even in sterile samples, such as blood, placenta, breast milk, skin, vagina, and stool. The neonatal microbiome remarkably influences both fetal and neonatal life related to health status and disease outcome. However, its origins pose a question: does it stem from a direct gateway or through a breakdown of barriers? This review provides a brief overview of evidence and speculative insights.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#This study aimed to validate the risk stratification system (RSS) and biopsy criteria for cervical lymph nodes (LNs) proposed by the Korean Society of Thyroid Radiology (KSThR). @*Materials and Methods@#This retrospective study included a consecutive series of preoperative patients with thyroid cancer who underwent LN biopsy, ultrasound (US), and computed tomography (CT) between December 2006 and June 2015. LNs were categorized as probably benign, indeterminate, or suspicious according to the current US- and CT-based RSS and the size thresholds for cervical LN biopsy as suggested by the KSThR. The diagnostic performance and unnecessary biopsy rates were calculated. @*Results@#A total of 277 LNs (53.1% metastatic) in 228 patients (mean age ± standard deviation, 47.4 years ± 14) were analyzed. In US, the malignancy risks were significantly different among the three categories (all P 5 mm LNs, P ≥ 0.177). The criteria covering only suspicious LNs showed higher specificity and lower unnecessary biopsy rates than the current criteria, while maintaining sensitivity in all imaging modalities. @*Conclusion@#Integrative evaluation of US and CT helps in reducing the proportion of indeterminate LNs and the malignancy risk among them. Nodal size did not affect the malignancy risk of LNs, and the addition of indeterminate LNs to biopsy candidates did not have an advantage in detecting LN metastases in all imaging modalities.

ABSTRACT

Background@#Dermatophyte infection is one of the most common skin diseases affecting the skin, hair, and nails. Despite widespread recognition of the disease, missing details and misperceptions are commonplace in the general population. @*Objective@#This study aimed to investigate the public perception and behavior regarding dermatophytosis of the hands and feet. @*Methods@#This results from an online survey conducted between July 2022 and August 2022. The survey included 1,000 Korean participants aged 20 to 69 years, of whom 60% experienced symptoms of tinea pedis or onychomycosis. The questionnaire focused on the awareness and personal experience of tinea pedis and perception of the treatment of dermatophytosis. @*Results@#Of the 1,000 participants, nearly 80% regarded tinea pedis as a common skin condition by which anyone can be affected. Furthermore, 88.4% had heard that the treatment of tinea pedis could be harmful, causing skin rash (60.4%) and worsening liver function (48.5%). Among 896 participants who noticed suspicious symptoms, 81.2% did not visit the clinic because it was not severe (50.1%) and seemed easily manageable (25.7%). Of the respondents, 84.4% preferred to meet dermatologists rather than non-dermatologist doctors regarding skin diseases, mainly because of trust in experts and belief in a faster cure. @*Conclusion@#Providing accurate and detailed information via online media, educational campaigns, and medical papers can rectify misconceptions and improve patient appliance, contributing to public skin health.

ABSTRACT

Diagnosis and analysis of occlusal relationships are important factors in prosthetic treatment. A thorough occlusion analysis and evaluation should be performed before treatment to restore a stable interocclusal relationship. Analysis and evaluation are essential during the treatment process and at regular follow-ups. Recently, with the development of dental equipment and digital processing methods, new quantitative analysis methods that can record the patient’s occlusal relationship have been introduced. Among them, the T-Scan Novus (Tekscan Inc., S. Boston, MA, USA) displays the strength of the initial contact point and the occlusal contact point of the teeth using a pressure sensor. With this, occlusal contact time of the teeth, anteroposterior and left-right balance of occlusal force can be compared. The Dental prescale II (GC Co., Tokyo, Japan) scans the occlusal contact point using a pressure-sensing film and analyzes the density of the contact point. It can measure the distribution and strength of the occlusal force of the teeth in the most natural occlusion state. Based on this, appropriate prosthetic treatment (four-unit fixed partial denture, removable partial denture, complete denture, and complete oral restoration cases) was performed according to the area and extent of the patient’s tooth loss. The patient’s occlusion at the first visit, treatment stage, right after treatment, and regular follow-up were compared and evaluated using a quantitative method for appropriate occlusion analysis using T-Scan Novus and Dental prescale II. This report enhances the understanding of occlusion analysis during prosthetic restoration. The results satisfied both the clinician and patients in terms of function and aesthetics.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#In September 2018, the traffic law revision has enforced all passengers in cars to wear seatbelts. Our study aims to investigate the effects of this law revision on fellow passengers involved in car accidents by considering their seatbelt-wearing rate and severity score. @*Methods@#This study is a retrospective observational study. Data were collected from the Emergency Department-based Injury in-depth Surveillance (for the years 2017 and 2019), Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Candidates were patients who visited emergency rooms (ERs) of 23 hospitals from January to December in the years 2017 and 2019. Patients under the age of 15 years or without Excess Mortality Ratio-adjusted Injury Severity Score (EMR-ISS) data or having accidents on highways were excluded. @*Results@#The total number of patients who visited ERs during the study periods was 91,506 and 14,806 in 2017 and 2019, respectively, and were included in our study. There were more fellow female passengers than male passengers during both the study periods: 5,559 in 2017 (67.9%) and 4,341 in 2019 (66.8%). Compared to 52.2% in 2017, the rate of wearing seatbelts increased to 54.5% in 2019. However, after adjusting for age, sex, use of ambulance, injury time, alcohol use, type of road, and counterpart, multivariate logistic regression revealed that compared to the 2017 group, the odds ratio of severe injuries in the 2019 group was 1.10 (95% confidence interval, 0.98-1.24). @*Conclusion@#Increased rate of wearing seatbelts after imposing the traffic law revision was not satisfactory. Therefore, it is necessary to tighten regulations on fellow passengers without seat belts and improve awareness through public relations.

ABSTRACT

Background@#Current international guidelines recommend against deep sedation as it is associated with worse outcomes in the intensive care unit (ICU). However, in Korea the prevalence of deep sedation and its impact on patients in the ICU are not well known. @*Methods@#From April 2020 to July 2021, a multicenter, prospective, longitudinal, noninterventional cohort study was performed in 20 Korean ICUs. Sedation depth extent was divided into light and deep using a mean Richmond Agitation–Sedation Scale value within the first 48 hours. Propensity score matching was used to balance covariables; the outcomes were compared between the two groups. @*Results@#Overall, 631 patients (418 [66.2%] and 213 [33.8%] in the deep and light sedation groups, respectively) were included. Mortality rates were 14.1% and 8.4% in the deep and light sedation groups (P = 0.039), respectively. Kaplan-Meier estimates showed that time to extubation (P < 0.001), ICU length of stay (P = 0.005), and death P = 0.041) differed between the groups. After adjusting for confounders, early deep sedation was only associated with delayed time to extubation (hazard ratio [HR], 0.66; 95% confidence inter val [CI], 0.55– 0.80; P < 0.001). In the matched cohort, deep sedation remained significantly associated with delayed time to extubation (HR, 0.68; 95% 0.56–0.83; P < 0.001) but was not associated with ICU length of stay (HR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.79–1.13; P = 0.500) and in-hospital mortality (HR, 1.19; 95% CI, 0.65–2.17; P = 0.582). @*Conclusion@#In many Korean ICUs, early deep sedation was highly prevalent in mechanically ventilated patients and was associated with delayed extubation, but not prolonged ICU stay or in-hospital death.

ABSTRACT

Background@#Currently, there is no consensus on the treatment of psoriasis in Korean patients. @*Objective@#This study aimed to establish a consensus on the basic therapeutic principles for Korean patients with plaque psoriasis. @*Methods@#Using the modified Delphi method, a steering committee proposed 53 statements for the first Delphi round, which covered five subjects: (1) the goal of treatment and evaluation of disease severity, (2) topical therapy, (3) phototherapy, (4) conventional systemic therapy, and (5) biologic therapy. The panel of dermatologists scored the level of agreement for each statement on a ten-point scale with scores ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 10 (strongly agree). After discussing the results of the first round, the committee reformulated 41 statements. Finally, consensus was defined as more than 70% of the second round scores being ≥7. @*Results@#The panel participants strongly agreed that the ideal treatment goals for Korean patients with plaque psoriasis should include complete skin clearance and high dermatological quality of life. A strong consensus was also reached on the use of topical agents for psoriasis of any severity, the consideration of phototherapy before biologics therapy, the conventional systemic agents for moderate-to-severe psoriasis, and the recommendation of biologic for retractable psoriasis to conventional systemic therapy and phototherapy. @*Conclusion@#This modified Delphi panel established an expert consensus on the therapeutic approach for Korean patients with plaque psoriasis. This consensus may improve the treatment outcomes for psoriasis in Korea.

ABSTRACT

Background@#Recent studies suggest that MEK1/2 inhibitors, including binimetinib, significantly improve malignant melanoma (MM) patient survival. Growing evidence suggests that phytochemicals, especially curcumin, can overcome drug resistance in cancer cells through a variety of mechanisms. @*Objective@#This study aims to examine curcumin’s efficacy in vitro combined with binimetinib in human MM cells. @*Methods@#We used 2D monolayer and 3D spheroid human epidermal melanocyte culture models, HEMn-MP (human epidermal melanocytes, neonatal, moderately pigmented), and two human MM cell lines, G361 and SK-MEL-2, to evaluate cell viability, proliferation, migration, death, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production following single therapy treatment, with either curcumin or binimetinib, or a combination of both. @*Results@#Compared to MM cells treated with single therapy, those with combination therapy showed significantly decreased cell viability and increased ROS production. We observed apoptosis following both single and combination therapies. However only those who had had combination therapy had necroptosis. @*Conclusion@#Collectively, our data demonstrates that curcumin exerts significant synergistic anticancer effects on MM cells by inducing ROS and necroptosis when combined with binimetinib. Therefore, a strategy of adding curcumin to conventional anticancer agents holds promise for treating MM.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been affecting the safety of hospital healthcare workers and the outcome of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients. This study aimed to analyze the influence of the changes inhospital infection control protocols (ICP) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) environment on the treatment outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients. @*Methods@#The medical records of patients who visited the emergency room were retrospectively reviewed for the period from March 13, 2019 to March 13, 2021. Patient data were analyzed before and after March 13, 2020, when the “in-hospital CPR guidelines related to COVID-19 infection” was recommended by the Korean Society of Emergency Medicine. We performed a comparison and analysis of the first epinephrine administration time and the intubation time with other CPR-related factors in both groups. The in-hospital return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and the over 24-hour survival rate were defined as treatment outcomes. @*Results@#A total number of 453 patients were included in the study. After ICP, the in-hospital ROSC was increased (29.8% vs. 42.1%, P=0.006), whereas the over 24-hour survival rate was decreased (67.2% vs. 40.6%, P=0.001). The time intervals from the hospital visit to the first epinephrine administration—1.0 (0-1.0) vs. 1.0 (0-2.0), P=0.007—and tracheal intubation—1.0 (0-1.0) vs. 1.0 (1.0-2.8), P<0.001—were statistically significantly higher than those before ICP application. In our multivariable analysis, the ICP application and pre-hospital emergency medical service (EMS) response time were factors associated with the treatment outcome. @*Conclusion@#After the application of the ICP, both the first epinephrine administration time and the tracheal intubation time from the patient’s hospital visit were prolonged. The application of ICP and the delayed EMS response time were factors associated with the treatment outcome.

ABSTRACT

Osteoporosis is a major health problem confronting middle-aged women today. Enhancing calcium intake in early adulthood can increase the rate of calcium gain in bone. In this study, we investigated the association of bone health-related nutritional knowledge levels with calcium-related dietary behavior and nutrition education among women. Data were collected using questionnaires from 347 women aged 20∼30 residing in Gyeonggi-do. Subjects were categorized into two groups according to their bone health-related nutritional knowledge (high or low-knowledge group). Knowledge related to bone health and calcium, and dietary habits was assessed, and the preference for and intake frequency of calcium-rich food were collected and analyzed using food frequency questionnaires. The high-knowledge group showed a significantly higher rate of nutritional education experience (33.9%) when compared with the low-knowledge group (18.9%). Not only were the perceptions regarding milk and dairy products more positive in the high-knowledge group (P<0.05), but the intake frequency of calcium-rich foods, such as tofu, soybean, and anchovies, was also higher in this group compared to the low-knowledge group (P<0.05). Overall, the preference for all calcium-rich foods was positively correlated to their intake frequency (P<0.05). Nutrition education experience and the recognition of the need for such education were positively correlated with the bone health-related nutrition knowledge score (P<0.05). In conclusion, bone health-related nutritional knowledge can affect calcium-related dietary behavior and increase the intake of calcium-rich food of 20∼30-year-old women and this can contribute to the prevention of osteoporosis. To improve bone health-related nutritional knowledge among young women, it may be important to provide nutrition education.

ABSTRACT

Tramadol is an opioid analog used to treat chronic and acute pain. Intradermal injections of tramadol at hundreds of millimoles have been shown to produce a local anesthetic effect. We used the whole-cell patch-clamp technique in this study to investigate whether tramadol blocks the sodium current in HEK293 cells, which stably express the pain threshold sodium channel Na v1.7 or the cardiac sodium channel Na v1.5. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration of tramadol was 0.73 mM for Na v1.7 and 0.43 mM for Na v1.5 at a holding potential of –100 mV. The blocking effects of tramadol were completely reversible. Tramadol shifted the steady-state inactivation curves of Na v1.7 and Na v1.5 toward hyperpolarization. Tramadol also slowed the recovery rate from the inactivation of Na v1.7 and Na v1.5 and induced stronger use-dependent inhibition. Because the mean plasma concentration of tramadol upon oral administration is lower than its mean blocking concentration of sodium channels in this study, it is unlikely that tramadol in plasma will have an analgesic effect by blocking Na v1.7 or show cardiotoxicity by blocking Na v1.5. However, tramadol could act as a local anesthetic when used at a concentration of several hundred millimoles by intradermal injection and as an antiarrhythmic when injected intravenously at a similar dose, as does lidocaine.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a sleep-related breathing disorder that can have a significant impact on the quality of life. According to recent studies, some OSAS patients exhibit swallowing abnormalities, such as the premature entry of food into the hypopharynx, and laryngeal penetration. We aimed to evaluate the swallowing function of OSAS patients and compare swallowing-related parameters between OSAS severity groups through a video fluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS). @*Methods@#Ninety-two participants with a symptom of snoring were enrolled in this retrospective study. Eighty-four participants were diagnosed with OSAS by polysomnography. The subjects were evaluated using the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and divided into four groups, namely non-OSAS, mild, moderate, and severe OSAS. Since all patients reported choking symptoms, they underwent VFSS and were evaluated for penetration or aspiration. The temporal parameters evaluated were oral transit time, pharyngeal transit time, and pharyngeal delay time. The movement parameters assessed were the distance, duration, and velocity of laryngeal elevation (LE). @*Results@#Penetration was detected in six OSAS patients, but aspiration was not observed in any patient. Seventy-four patients showed vallecular and pyriform sinus residue, although the amount was not significantly large. There was no significant difference in any of the temporal parameters between the groups except pharyngeal transit time with 10 ml of yogurt. In the Pearson’s correlation and multivariate linear regression analysis, LE distance and LE velocity, both correlated with AHI scores with 5 ml of liquid, 10 ml of liquid, and 10 ml of yogurt, respectively. @*Conclusion@#Severe OSAS patients showed longer and faster hyolaryngeal movement while swallowing, which may be a compensatory movement to prevent penetration or aspiration.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiologic features of pediatric dental injury according to age groups using Korean national data. @*Methods@#We reviewed the data from 2015 to 2019 Emergency Department-based Injury In-depth Surveillance registry, which involves 23 emergency departments in Korea. We included children aged 18 years or younger with the International Classification of Disease, 10th Revision codes related to dental injury. Other or combined codes were excluded. The children were classified by age groups: infants (< 1 year), preschoolers (2-6), schoolers (7-12), and adolescents (13-18). As per the age groups, we compared the clinical characteristics, injury event profiles, and outcomes. @*Results@#The study population (n = 33,020) consisted of 8,900 infants (27.0%), 15,705 preschoolers (47.6%), 5,295 schoolers (16.0%), and 3,120 adolescents (9.4%). Their median age was 3 years (interquartile range, 1-7), and boys accounted for 64.2%. The most common mechanism, type of activity, and place were slip down (14,274 [43.2%]), daily activity (23,777 [72.0%]), and home (19,980 [60.5%]), respectively. Among the injury types, soft tissue injury was most common (24,357 [73.8%]). As for the outcomes, 32,841 (99.5%) children were discharged, and 332 (1.0%) children had severe injury. As the age increased, the frequencies changed as follows. As for the place and type, household injury and soft tissue injury decreased while outdoor injury, such as road traffic injury, and tooth fracture increased (P < 0.001). As for the type of activity, injuries related to exercise/sports and education increased (P < 0.001). Of the sports activity, ball sports increased while kickboard/cycle decreased (P < 0.001). @*Conclusion@#Using the epidemiologic features of pediatric dental injury, it is advisable to establish injury prevention strategies according to the age groups.

ABSTRACT

Deep learning has shown its feasibility for applications in medical imaging. Deep learning-based methods are also rapidly being applied in a wide range of areas to replace traditional model-based methods, showing remarkable improvements in several MR image processing areas such as image reconstruction, image contrast conversion, and image quality improvement. With improvement of perfusion MRI techniques, various clinical applications have been also researched, which have improved tracer-kinetic modeling, and vice versa. Representatively, increased vascularity due to tumor angiogenesis, altered permeability due to blood-brain barrier breakdown, and quantifiable absolute cerebral blood perfusion can be imaged via perfusion MRI techniques. As a result, a large number of retrospective and prospective studies have proven that perfusion MRI can be used clinically to investigate various diseases (ranging from brain tumor, stroke, and migraine to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease) and various organs including brain, breast, prostate, and pancreas. However, tracer-kinetic model-based processing of parametric maps requires many physical assumptions, which is time-consuming with limitations in clinical applications. With current rapid development of deep learning technologies, the importance of the role of deep learning in MR imaging research appears to be increasing. Specifically for processing perfusion MRI, deep learning has its merit as an end-to-end model-free approach, resulting in markedly reduced processing time compared to conventional iterative methods thanks to its nearly instantaneous inference despite long training time. In this review, first, basic principles of MR physics in perfusion MRI are described. Recent progress and current challenges in both technical improvement and clinical applications of perfusion MRI using deep learning techniques are then summarized.

ABSTRACT

Background@#Radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy is a successful therapeutic modality for Graves’ disease. However, RAI therapy can fail, and RAI therapy after antithyroid drugs (ATDs) has a lower remission rate. Therefore, many patients require repeated RAI therapy. This study investigated the clinical outcomes of repeated RAI therapy for Graves’ disease. @*Methods@#Patients who underwent RAI therapy as second-line therapy after failure of ATD treatment between 2001 and 2015 were reviewed. Remission was defined as hypothyroid or euthyroid status without ATD, and with or without levothyroxine at 12 months after RAI therapy. @*Results@#The 1-year remission rate after 2nd RAI therapy (66%, 152/230) is significantly higher than that after 1st RAI therapy (48%, 393/815) or long-term ATD treatment after 1st RAI therapy failure (42%). The clinical response to 2nd RAI therapy was more rapid. The median time intervals from the 2nd RAI therapy to ATD discontinuation (1.3 months) and to the start of levothyroxine replacement (2.5 months) were significantly shorter than those for the 1st RAI therapy. A smaller goiter size, a longer time interval between the 1st and 2nd RAI therapies, and a longer ATD discontinuation period predicted remission after the 2nd RAI therapy. Finally, in 78 patients who failed the 2nd RAI therapy, the mean ATD dosage significantly reduced 5.1 mg over 12 months. @*Conclusion@#Repeated RAI therapy can be a good therapeutic option, especially in patients with smaller goiters and those who are more responsive to the 1st RAI therapy.

ABSTRACT

Digital technology is gradually expanding its field and has a great influence on various fields of dentistry. Recently in digital dentistry, the importance of superimposing various 3-dimensional (3D) image data is emerging, in order to utilize gathered data effectively for diagnosis and prosthesis fabrication. Integrating data from facial scans, intraoral scans, and mandibular movement recordings can create a virtual patient. A virtual patient is formed by integrating digital 3D diagnostic data such as intraoral and extraoral soft tissues, residual dentition, and dynamic occlusion, and the results of prosthetic treatment can be evaluated virtually. The patients in this case report were a 37-year-old female whose chief complaint is that the appearance of the existing prosthesis was distorted and a 55-year-old female patient whose anterior prosthesis needed to be refabricated after the endodontic treatment. 3D facial scans were obtained from each patient, and the patient’s mandibular movements were recorded using ARCUS Digma 2 (KaVo Dental GmbH, Biberach an der Riss, Germany). The collected data were integrated on computer-aided design (CAD) software (Exocad dental CAD; exocad GmbH, Darmstadt, Germany) and transferred to a virtual articulator to create a digital virtual patient. The temporary fixed prostheses were designed, restored, and evaluated, and it was reflected into the final restorations. With the aid of the virtual dental patient, accuracy and predictability could be increased throughout treatment, simplifying the occlusal adjustment and clinical evaluation with improved esthetic outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#Pediatricians have a significant responsibility to educate mothers about the importance of breastfeeding. However, there have been minimal efforts in the courses of resident training in Korea. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the change in knowledge and attitude before and after a 4-week breastfeeding educational intervention among multicenter residents. @*Methods@#Prospective interventional educational research was designed for residents at eight training hospitals in Korea. Institutional reviews were obtained in each hospital. The education curriculum consisted of 14 courses regarding breastfeeding theory and practice. These materials were used to teach pediatric residents for 4 weeks. Knowledge-based tests were administered before the course, and re-tests were administered after the course using different test items of similar levels. Test scores and survey responses were compared before and after the intervention. @*Results@#A total of 73 residents (1st year 20, 2nd year 23, 3rd year 16, and 4th year residents 14) from eight training hospitals completed the intervention. Their average age was 30.3±2.9 years, 17 (23.3%) were male, 22 (30.1%) were married, and eight had more than one child of their own. The mean pre-test score was 61.8±13.4 and the mean post-test score was 78.3±7.5 (P<0.001). The inter-grade difference in the score was significant in the pre-test (P=0.005), but not significant in the post-test (P=0.155). There were more responses of obtaining confidence after the intervention (P<0.001). @*Conclusion@#In our study, pediatric residents showed improvement in their knowledge and confidence level after 4 weeks of the breastfeeding curriculum. This will provide a basis for future policymaking in the training of pediatric residents regarding breastfeeding in Korea.
